  • Battlefield: Hardline

    Battlefield: Hardline

Delivering an all-new canvas for the best-in-class first person action gameplay the Battlefield franchise is known for, Battlefield Hardline sees Visceral Games bring its critically-acclaimed single player storytelling pedigree to provide an engaging story in a setting reminiscent of modern TV crime dramas. In multiplayer, fans will feel the thrill of the heist or the satisfaction of the ultimate bust with new twists including new modes, weapons, vehicles and gadgets.

Powered by DICE’s award-winning Frostbite 3 game engine, Battlefield Hardline lets players trigger jaw-dropping Levolution events as they shoot out subterranean grow-labs, blow open bank vaults, or tear apart the streets of Los Angeles. Introducing a new arsenal of guns and gadgets, including stun guns, zip lines, and grappling hooks, players take on a bold new level of strategy as both cops and criminals on every map. Maintaining the epic vehicular combat fans have come to expect from Battlefield, Battlefield Hardline ushers in a fast and fresh urban approach to vehicles with loot-laden getaway motorcycles and nimble police choppers to navigate sprawling skyscrapers.

  • Trials Fusion: The Awesome Max Edition

Trials Fusion: The Awesome Max Edition

Trials is back, and this time it's... well, not gone in a direction you were likely expecting. It's set in the future.

Gone are the grimy warehouses of old in favour of all sorts of futuristic newfangledness. Retro futuristic newfangledness, at that. You don't need to look any further than the title screen to get the message that Trials Fusion isn't taking itself too seriously. The music playing sounds like it was produced for Transformers: The Animated Movie then run through 2014 production techniques, while the rider you can see has Iron Man pants on his lower half.

The vision of the future developer RedLynx has gone for is a mix of preposterous gleaming towers, platforms and technology with apparent slapstick carelessness on the part of the people in charge. There's some great level design on show, which city tracks that take you from twilit marinas to rooftop chases across the tops of zeppelins. The wilderness levels are still here, but now they've got retro-futurism mashed in with them as well.

The core game remains basically unchanged. For the most part, you brake, accelerate and lean. As ever, getting your balance right is key to being able to guide your bike across ever-more fiendish platforming levels. Yes, 'ever-more fiendish'. Trials' serious difficulty curve is back with a vengeance, and the game remains extremely rewarding because of it.

Tricks are included, with players now bringing in the right stick to pull off moves like the Superman in the occasional stage. The game is also peppered with skill games that will set you a challenge such as climbing a near-vertical track as far as you can.

Trials Fusion also brings level creation back to the table. Players can build their own courses and get everything in their toolkit that the developers at RedLynx had when they were designing the game. While level building won't be everyone's cup of tea, what it will mean for everyone is a steady stream of weird and wonderful new tracks getting piped to our consoles on a continuous basis.

With the retail edition, players also get the Trials Season Pass, complete with access to a range of post-launch content.

  • The Crew

    The Crew

    Racing  >  Car
It's difficult to set apart a console racer. Some attempt to do it with laser-focused realism, some go for mad, over-the-top racing antics. With The Crew, Ubisoft is looking to set itself apart with masses of ambition.

First, the plot. Yes, this is one of those racing games with a plot. Your job is to infiltrate and overtake the 510s, a gang that's come up from Detroit's illegal street racing scene. To do this, you'll need to build up a rep while secretly wreaking havoc on their activities in cities right across the United States.

And there is a LOT of the United States to go at. Locations include everywhere from New York City to Los Angeles, to Miami Beach to Monument Valley. The terrain ranges from the tight corners of downtown cities to suburbs to cornfields to canyons.

The real drive of The Crew, though, is its massively multiplayer status. It's a world populated by other real-world drivers. You'll need to build a crew of four with an interface that's designed to be seamless. You might be taking out a convoy, evading police or just flat-out racing, but you never have to do it alone.

The style is very much on the arcade-y end of the spectrum, but The Crew still also offers extensive customisation tools to tune and perfect your licensed cars.

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

    Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes the stellar blockbuster franchise and shifts it in a new direction.

The biggest change for fans of the Call of Duty series will be the fact that for the first time, development isn't led by series veterans Infinity Ward or Treyarch, but by relative newcomer Sledgehammer Games.

With a new team comes a somewhat new direction. While Call of Duty: Black Ops II pushed things into the near future of 2025, Advanced Warfare takes things further. The game puts players in the futuristic gear of Jack Mitchell. It's a future where the world has been devastated by a global attack and Atlas, a Private Military Corporation, is effectively a superpower for hire.

Activision has gone to pains to state that this is a carefully researched future, so don't expect black hole guns or laser blasters. The most immediate impact of this premise, then, is the exoskeleton players wear. This piece of kit enhances the player's movement with bigger leaps, dashes and dodges.

The exoskeleton, along with the futuristic weaponry on offer, changes the way gamers will play Call of Duty, and of course that extends to the game's multiplayer.

All of this is polished off with a revamped Create-a-Class feature, offering the deepest customisation options in a Call of Duty game yet.

  • Assassin's Creed: Rogue

    Assassin's Creed: Rogue

While Assassin's Credd: Unity moves the blockbuster series onto next-gen platforms, Rogue has those on older systems (or just those who fancy a double AC dose this year) covered.

It's a canny blend of the familiar and the unfamiliar. The game builds on the assets and mechanics established in AC3 and Black Flag, but gives them a serious twist. It's set, once again, during the Seven Years War for control of the colonies. The difference is that this time you're not playing on the side of the assassins - you're a templar. Our (anti)hero is Shay Cormac, an assassin who's an assassin either turning bad or finally picking the right side, depending on where in Rogue's many shades of grey you fall.

While much of the game will feel faintly familiar to longtime fans, the developers at Ubisoft Sofia have been able to focus squarely on content thanks to the groundwork laid in previous games. Alabama and Quebec are now part of the picture, providing a change of scenery. Perhaps the biggest change comes from playing as a templar, though. Missions that would previously have been assassination attempts become assassination prevention attempts, with the aim being to keep a target alive.

The sailing mechanics that were so popular in Black Flag make a reappearence, with players getting the Morrigan, a slimmer, more manouvrable vessel than the Jackdaw. New bits and pieces have been brought in too. Most notable is the air rifle, which allows players to take out enemies with a fresh range of ammo types.

Rogue offers up plenty of the good stuff that Assassin's Creed fans love, with a big enough dash of the new to add spice to proceedings.

  • Watch_Dogs

    Watch_Dogs

In Watch_Dogs, Ubisoft's open-world thriller that has been hyped to the moon and back, you play as Aiden Pierce, a hacker in Chicago on the hunt for his niece's killer.

Yes, it's an open-world thriller. No, that doesn't mean that its defining feature will be driving over pedestrians as it has been in every Grand Theft Auto-alike since the dawn of... well, Grand Theft Auto. In Ubisoft's vision of Chicago, the much-vaunted 'Internet of Things' is already a reality. For those who don't spend their free time reading the tech blogs, that means that pretty much every machine that could have a microchip does have a microchip. All systems are run through a centralised operating system, CTOS, which provides city-wide wi-fi and keeps the traffic lights changing when they should, the trains running on time and... well, everything's automated, basically.

The downside of this is the near-nonexistence of privacy as the all-seeing CTOS captures all your data and knows everything about you.

It's all hackable, too, and as Aiden you'll make your way in the world by hacking all that personal data, not to mention all those lovely automated systems. When confronting an enemy, for example, you might use your smartphone to identify their location through a wall, hack a crane to drop a container on them or even send a fake text to distract them while you line them up in your crosshairs. It can all get a bit underhand if you want it to, and strategy is a definite must.

The tables can be turned, however. If you play online, another player can slip into your game and hack your smartphone, then it becomes a race against time to identify who among the in-game characters is actually the interloper.

Watch_Dogs is cyberpunk for the 21st century, and it may be your first taste of what's to come...

    Rory McIlroy: PGA Tour

    Sport  >  Golf
The PGA Tour series has dominated the world of golf in video games for nearly two and a half decades, but with the latest iteration of the long-standing franchise making its true current-generation debut, change is in the air.

The most obvious difference, of course, is the cover star. Tiger Woods' career is no longer on the upswing it once was and Rory McIlroy, a fresh up-and-comer, has appeared to mark a change in direction for the series. Because, while the absence of Tiger on the cover may take some getting used to at first, more has changed here than just the game's box.

The first change players will notice is the introduction of revamped swing mechanics. There are three different interfaces to choose from, catering to different skill levels. The arcade swing is the easiest, offering laser-like accuracy. The classic style is the most familiar to golfing gamers, offering a three click process to dictate your power and accuracy. Finally, for those wanting to push their game to the next level there's the Tour swing.

Another big change is the way EA has opened up the game's environments. Each course now loads as a whole, effectively making it a sandbox for players to explore rather than a set of discreet holes.

It's fitting that as PGA Tour makes its debut onto the new generation of consoles, it offers the deepest golfing simulation yet.

  • Battlefield 4

    Battlefield 4

EA's flagship first-person shooter is back, and it's got more hype and expectation behind it than ever.

Most gamers, of course, will be coming for the multiplayer. There have been some significant strides in the single-player mode too, though. Battlefield 4's campaign is somewhere between the straightforward, linear progression of Battlefield 3's single-player mode and the more freeform set-pieces of Bad Company 2, and it's a happy compromise. Indeed, some of the single-player set-pieces on offer are among the game's strongest moments.

The campaign centres around around Admiral Chang, a member of the military attempting to incite civil war in China. He's convinced the military that the US is behind the killing of a peace-loving local politician and he's enlisted Russia to help in his coup. As you might expect, fighting erupts!

Some of the campaign's thrills involve surviving a fall through a collapsing building, fighting enemy planes in a nasty dogfight and hitching an airborne ride using a skyhook.

There's been a lot of fine tuning of the series' multiplayer offering since Battlefield 3. It launches with a major overhaul of the balancing in effect. Players will still have to invest a fair old chunk of time to get at weapon unlocks and upgrades, but DICE has avoided this meaning insta-death for newcomers by giving them a solid armoury. Similarly, vehicles are no longer quite the trump card they once were thanks to a cooldown-based ammo counter.

There are 10 maps available at launch, but they'll tailor themselves to the mode you're playing. For example, Hainan Resort - a series of tropical islands - will only be partially opened for Squad Deathmatch, but all of it will be available when it comes to a match of the returning Conquest mode.

DICE has also made much of its catchily-named 'Levolution', which will see the maps shifting under your feet as dynamic environmental events take place!
