  • Battlefield: Hardline

    Battlefield: Hardline

Delivering an all-new canvas for the best-in-class first person action gameplay the Battlefield franchise is known for, Battlefield Hardline sees Visceral Games bring its critically-acclaimed single player storytelling pedigree to provide an engaging story in a setting reminiscent of modern TV crime dramas. In multiplayer, fans will feel the thrill of the heist or the satisfaction of the ultimate bust with new twists including new modes, weapons, vehicles and gadgets.

Powered by DICE’s award-winning Frostbite 3 game engine, Battlefield Hardline lets players trigger jaw-dropping Levolution events as they shoot out subterranean grow-labs, blow open bank vaults, or tear apart the streets of Los Angeles. Introducing a new arsenal of guns and gadgets, including stun guns, zip lines, and grappling hooks, players take on a bold new level of strategy as both cops and criminals on every map. Maintaining the epic vehicular combat fans have come to expect from Battlefield, Battlefield Hardline ushers in a fast and fresh urban approach to vehicles with loot-laden getaway motorcycles and nimble police choppers to navigate sprawling skyscrapers.

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

    Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes the stellar blockbuster franchise and shifts it in a new direction.

The biggest change for fans of the Call of Duty series will be the fact that for the first time, development isn't led by series veterans Infinity Ward or Treyarch, but by relative newcomer Sledgehammer Games.

With a new team comes a somewhat new direction. While Call of Duty: Black Ops II pushed things into the near future of 2025, Advanced Warfare takes things further. The game puts players in the futuristic gear of Jack Mitchell. It's a future where the world has been devastated by a global attack and Atlas, a Private Military Corporation, is effectively a superpower for hire.

Activision has gone to pains to state that this is a carefully researched future, so don't expect black hole guns or laser blasters. The most immediate impact of this premise, then, is the exoskeleton players wear. This piece of kit enhances the player's movement with bigger leaps, dashes and dodges.

The exoskeleton, along with the futuristic weaponry on offer, changes the way gamers will play Call of Duty, and of course that extends to the game's multiplayer.

All of this is polished off with a revamped Create-a-Class feature, offering the deepest customisation options in a Call of Duty game yet.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Call of Duty: Black Ops III delivers a campaign that can be played as a full single player game or co-op online with up to four players, the deepest, most rewarding multiplayer ever offered in Call of Duty and, a mind blowing Call of Duty Zombies experience that, for the first time, features its own XP progression system.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops III campaign deploys players into a future world, where bio-technology coupled with cybernetic enhancements has given rise to a new breed of Black Ops soldier. Through Direct Neural Interface (DNI) technology, players are now connected to the intelligence grid and their fellow operatives during battle. In a world more divided than ever, this elite squad consists of men and women who have enhanced their combat capabilities to fight faster, stronger and smarter.

The most engaging and rewarding multiplayer offering to date debuts a new momentum-based, chained-movement system that allows players to move fluidly through custom-built environments with finesse, all while maintaining complete control over their weapon at all times. Treyarch also introduces its new Specialist system, which lets players choose and rank up nine elite Black Ops soldiers, each with their own look, personality, voice and battle-hardened weapons and abilities, fundamentally changing the way players engage in combat. Multiplayer is rounded out with an all-new weapon customisation system that give players more powerful tools than ever to build and personalise that perfect weapon. Additional details about multiplayer will be announced at a later date.

No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies, rounding out the offering. Call of Duty: Black Ops III delivers a completely unique Zombies experience and is the most immersive and ambitious Zombies to date, complete with a new XP progression for players, adding unprecedented levels of depth and re-playability.

    Racing  >  Car
DriveClub is nuts. Evolution Studios wants to dazzle you with jazzy presentation right from the off, in an attempt to make the art of arcade racing a bit more exciting. If a PlayStation Eye is connected, you’ll be able to take a photo of your ugly mug - the first step in what is being called a Social Racing Experience.

You pick a car, as well as a driving ‘style’ and tackle a course. All sounds pretty normal, until you start playing.

It’s not just lap times you’re competing for, you see. On occasion, DriveClub will throw a Social Challenge at you, asking you to beat a high score set by one of your friends. These range from maintaining a top speed for a certain amount of time, to getting more drift points on a particular corner.

It's not all about beating your mates, though. As the name kind of hints, players form clubs with six friends and then compete together to earn fame. Each club member's actions contribute to the club's success.

Of course Evolution, known for the MotorStorm games, knows a thing or two about the actual driving side of things. The different locations ooze atmosphere and the weather is more than just an aethetic effect. If you're racing in Scotland and a downpour starts, the performance of your vehicle can turn on a dime, getting looser and less predictable.

While the PS4 won't have a Gran Turismo, a more serious approach to racing, for the first couple of years of its life, DriveClub gives the PS4 a nice, approachable and interactive way to scratch that driving itch.

  • inFAMOUS: Second Son

    inFAMOUS: Second Son

inFamous and it's (somewhat predictably-named) successor inFamous 2 were highlights of the PS3. They blended acrobatic parkour with an open world and elemental super-heroic fun. Depending on how you feel about the Batman games they were also, arguably, the best superhero games of the generation, without an established property or a costume in sight. We're in the age of the PlayStation 4 now, however, and with new hardware comes something of a new direction, as well as a brand new protagonist in Delsin Rowe.

Voiced by Troy Baker, Delsin is a conduit. If it's been a while since you've spent time in the world of inFamous, that's a metahuman. Unfortunately for him, the world's had enough of superhumans and the government's cracking down on them. Delsin's a younger protagonist that Cole McGrath was, though his youth comes with a dash of arrogance to offset it. Delsin takes on the abilities of other Conduits as he defeats them. You start off with smoke-based powers, but quickly pick up new abilities such as flame-based abilities and strange neon powers.

The venue's changed, too - this time we're in Seattle. That's right in developer Sucker Punch's back yard, so expect lots of knowing detail. The city's countercultural heritage is a perfect setting for playing an outsider hero at odds with authority, and it's mix of buildings provides ample opportunity for the free-running the series is known for.

The morality system is back, and how brutal or squeaky clean you opt to play will affect the course of your game.

  • Killzone: Shadow Fall

    Killzone: Shadow Fall

Killzone: Shadow Fall is clearly the launch-day technical showpiece for the PlayStation 4. Guerrilla Games’ leap into the next-gen is looking absolutely fantastic, swapping the dull greys and browns of past Killzone games with vibrant blues and greens.

The age-old conflict between humanity and the Helghast is on the agenda again, but things are a little different this time. It's been three decades since the Helghast refugees fled their devastated home world, and they've been living alongside their human cousins on the planet Vekta. A great wall separates them, but some things can't be fixed by a physical boundry. Players take on the role of Shadow Marshal Lucas Kellan, a human soldier who has to confront the realities of the human/Helghast conflict when a flashpoint brings him into contact with the deadly Helghast soldier Echo.

Gameplay is what you no doubt expect from Killzone - shooting the snot out of bad guys as you storm an area - although this time you get a real sense of atmosphere as stages branch out and feel much more open than past titles. Some missions do break from the series tradition, too, asking you to hack a terminal and defend it while incoming enemies try to stop you - with the option to take out targets any way you want. With the player alone for much of the game there's often more of a stealth component to the game, too, rewarding cunning over brawn.

Multiplayer is, of course, present and accounted for. 10 maps are available out of the box, with the option for players to create their own custom map presets known as 'Warzones'. The class system has been trimmed back to three categories: Assault, Scout and Support (which now includes some medic abilities from previous games). The levels are tightly designed, with plenty of elevation and stealthy routes to take.

If you're looking for a game that really shows what the PS4 can do, Killzone: Shadow Fall is your fella.

  • Knack

    Knack

There are a couple of reasons to sit up and pay attention to Knack. The first is that it’s the latest character platformer from the mind of legendary developer Mark Cerny, who was also instrumental in bringing Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Mega Drive classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to life. It’s also a colourful, vibrant and accessible complement to the rest of PS4‘s launch titles.

There's a war going on in Knack - a war between goblins and humans. While that might sound like the premise of an epic fantasy game, Knack is anything but that. The titular hero is a robot, created by a doctor and his sidekick, Lucas, to fight the monsters. Knack is only three feet tall, but has a very special ability - he can absorb bits of the environment to change and grow!

In gameplay terms, it’s something of a cross between Katamari Damacy and God of War. As you smash objects and enemies and collect the fragments that spill out of them, Knack dynamically grows in size to the point where one city-based level (split in this demo between several segments) sees you start as a tiny pudgy creature and finish as a colossal beast, towering over buildings. The camera - which can’t be operated by the player, swooping from area to area - is pulled from God of War, and the combat channels that to a degree.

Knack offers up epic action with a loveable face the entire family can appreciate.

  • Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare

    Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare

Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is either a brilliant idea or a totally bizarre one, depending on which way you tilt your head when you look at it. On the one hand, the game has its roots in a casual strategy title that's designed to be easy to pick up and play - that doesn't scream 'make a third-person shooter based on the Battlefield engine out of me!' On the other, the franchise is about plants and zombies trying to blast each other apart, so you can kind of see where EA is coming from.

The game is multiplayer only, with not even a half-baked attempt to introduce a campaign or solo play in a multiplayer style. It's all about taking on other players. And, of course, it wouldn't be much of a multiplayer shooter without direct competition, so in a break from previous games the zombies are playable for the first time.

The two sides are divided up into classes, with different weapons and styles for each side. For example, the Sunflower heals for the Plants, while the Scientist will do this job for the Zombies. The former heals with a beam of sunshine, while the latter uses a fire hydrant filled with purple goo. That gives you a bit of a taste of the strangeness you can expect to see on the screen at any given moment! The differing weapons means different tactics will be needed for each side, too, making for a deeper experience than you might expect.

This might sound like a bonkers idea for a shooter, but with such a strong pedigree behind it it could be the bridge between casual audiences and the FPS hardcore.

The differing weapons means different tactics will be needed for each side, too, making for a deeper experience than you might expect.

This might sound like a bonkers idea for a shooter, but with such a strong pedigree behind it it could be the bridge between casual audiences and the FPS hardcore.

Rory Mcilroy: PGA Tour

    Sport  >  Golf
The PGA Tour series has dominated the world of golf in video games for nearly two and a half decades, but with the latest iteration of the long-standing franchise making its true current-generation debut, change is in the air.

The most obvious difference, of course, is the cover star. Tiger Woods' career is no longer on the upswing it once was and Rory McIlroy, a fresh up-and-comer, has appeared to mark a change in direction for the series. Because, while the absence of Tiger on the cover may take some getting used to at first, more has changed here than just the game's box.

The first change players will notice is the introduction of revamped swing mechanics. There are three different interfaces to choose from, catering to different skill levels. The arcade swing is the easiest, offering laser-like accuracy. The classic style is the most familiar to golfing gamers, offering a three click process to dictate your power and accuracy. Finally, for those wanting to push their game to the next level there's the Tour swing.

Another big change is the way EA has opened up the game's environments. Each course now loads as a whole, effectively making it a sandbox for players to explore rather than a set of discreet holes.

It's fitting that as PGA Tour makes its debut onto the new generation of consoles, it offers the deepest golfing simulation yet.
