    Ashes Cricket 2009

    Sport  >  Cricket
Test Match cricket is an art form and a science combined - and it’s one that video games have struggled with. Not this time. Ashes Cricket 2009 places you at the forefront of the greatest of all Test series, and it does so with the skill of Graham Swan breaking a post-lunch ball through the gate; and with the panache of Ricky Ponting cover-driving for yet another century. Bat and bowl, set the field, and see the highly polished AI of the classy single-player experience discover your weaknesses as you probe for the same in the opposition. Like the real game, Ashes 2009 rewards practice, patience and flair as you learn the control system - it won’t take long to get to grips with, it will take time to master.

Playing as either Australia or the English and Welsh XI, you also get the chance to understand how the stars work. When bowling like Harminson or Jimmy Anderson, you have to tweak the controls to get the best from their particular actions. The same applies to batting like Hussey, Strauss and even Haurtiz. Don’t get too bogged down in the intricacies though - there are also one-dayers and the adrenalin-nuked 20/20 tournaments to play for truly rounded cricketing experience.

All up, Ashes 2009 is the game to take you through the high and lows of the nPower series - especially during those long, long rain delays.

    EA Sports MMA

A new Mixed Martial Arts game on the video gaming scene is decidedly good news for fans of the genre. EA's take on MMA comes without oodles of licensing but with full-on fight action.

First up to make sure that the various forms of beat-'em-up are played out as fairly as can be possible, legendary ref Big John McCarthy is on the case. He's joined by ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr, while MMA stalwarts Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo are in there calling all the action.

There are a variety of fight modes in play including Total Strike Control in which the player launches attacks using analog controls with everything they have from elbows, fists, knees and kicks.

This can be countered, if the player is fast enough, with the Advance Defence System whereby parrying, slipping, dodging and countering while under attack provide plenty of in-game tactics to master.

The game comes – where applicable – with Rumble, but its rumble that matters as it indicates crucial moments to attack and defend. Keeping a close eye on the stamina bar is also key to winning. Game modes include Submission Battles and Travel the Globe where the gamer must make calls into gyms in Japan, Brazil, Thailand, and the USA in order to gain new skills for the Career mode.

Then you'll get to fight great names such as Fedor Emelianenko, Randy Couture and Dan Henderson, Shinya Aoki and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. If that's not satisfying enough there is also Create a Fighter ( EA's Photo Game Face, if you like) to create your own roster of fighters.

All the fighting action can even be recorded or even broadcast live using EA's online services.

  • F1 2014

    F1 2014

It might not feel like it, but Codemasters has held the Formula One license for five years now. That's not mentioned here because F1 2014 is being treated as some sort of anniversary, but because you know that between that and titles like GRID and DiRT, Codies is bringing a real pedigree to the development of F1 2014.

The game is aimed squarely at fans of the sport. You won't get to fling cars round corners a la Forza Horizon, nor will you be likely to drift round corners, but a tight corner taken with precision offers its own particular reward.

Codemasters has really striven for authenticity, here. Visually, the game has clean edges and minimal presentation and all the detail of the officially licensed cars and drivers.

The biggest change comes not from the development team, but from the sport itself. F1 2014 incorporates the huge rule changes - the biggest in Formula One's history - including new aerodynamic regulations and turbo-charged power units. That means, of course, significant changes in how the cars handle from last year's game. All the changes to driver line-ups have been incorporated, of course, and new tracks have been included.

There are changes to the game itself too, though. A new driver evaluation system fine tunes the game to reflect their ability, and the difficulty goes up incrementally as the player progresses. For the hardcore F1 aficionados, though, there's always the option to customise their settings and really make the game their own.

    FIFA 11

It's difficult to always keep adding fresh new elements to a long-standing, best-loved football game series. But EA Sports have stepped up once again for FIFA 11, adding even more gameplay tweaks and feature bonuses to make this annual update worth your while.

Pro Passing gives players complete control over their player, as now a pass is only as successful as the skills of the person holding the controller. You always need to be paying attention to what's happening on the pitch, otherwise your passes can end up falling short of the mark, or being handed to the opposing team. Skill, situations on the pitch and urgency all come into play for a clean pass as well, so stay on your toes.

The real difference in FIFA 11 comes in its new Personality+ system, which gives players individual abilities that are reflected in the game. Each player acts and plays differently, and it is up to you to notice those characteristics and pass wisely in order to maximise your team's potential. Over 36 attributes and 57 traits can be found within each player, and will act just like their real-life counterparts. With this, you can truly get into the game and use your team's advantages and weaknesses to your benefit.

    FIFA 13: Ultimate Edition

Electronic Arts returns for the 2012/2013 football season with a new iteration of its single and multi-player soccer special. FIFA 13 comes with five innovations to add to the gameplay offered in FIFA 12.

FIFA 13 also comes, of course, with more than 500 officially licensed clubs with more than 60 officially licensed stadia and more than 15,000 players to choose from. There is also a massive soundtrack with more than 50 tracks.

The All-New Attacking Intelligence is the most sophisticated artificial intelligence that EA has managed to program in a FIFA title so far. AI players can now analyse space to enable them to work harder and smarter in order to break down the gamer's defence.

Also added is a new dribbling system that has been inspired by Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi. Called “Complete Dribbling” it enables players to face their opponent and use precise dribble touches combined with true 360-degree.

The next addition is the “FIFA 13 1st Touch Control” system that makes the AI opposition less perfect and more realistic in order to make battling for the ball more of a challenge.

The second generation of the Player Impact Engine is also included in FIFA 13. This expands physical play from collisions to off-the-ball battles between players. Defenders can push and pull for position, and use their unique sizes and strengths to force opponents into poor touches and decisions before the ball arrives.

“FIFA 13 Tactical Free Kicks” enable the gamer to create new and unpredictable free kicks positions and strategies: up to three players can congregate over the ball and then make dummy runs or use new passing options.

The EA Sports team has also ensured that “FIFA 13 Fundamentals”, the essential elements in footy have been retained. Importantly, referees will now make better decisions when awarding fouls and cards, and goalkeeper intelligence has been improved.

Standard FIFA elements such as local and Internet split-screen multiplayer as well as FIFA Ultimate Team and Career Mode are retained.

    FIFA 14

Not another iteration of FIFA, eh? No less than the ninth on this generation of consoles. After all, what more can they possibly do with it on Xbox 360 and PS3, right? Apparently quite a bit as it turns out...

The most apparent change is the improvement to player animation. Referred to by EA as ‘locomotion reinvented’, this system, two years in development, adheres more accurately then previous FIFAs to real world considerations such as weight and momentum to give a greater sense of physicality. From a gameplay perspective, expect players to have more apparent individuality than before as agility and athleticism plays more of a role in every on-field confrontation.

In the heat of a match these are considerations that may not be immediately apparent, but which embellish the overall look and feel of the game for the better. For example, for the first time in the series you can properly - and gleefully - ‘do’ a defender, leaving him off balance and several yards in your player's wake. Fortunately for the wronged fullback, it is also now possible to burst into a sprint from standing to make up lost yards and earn the chance to heroically dispossess his humiliator.

Things have improved on the offence, too. For all of the excellence of FIFAs 9 and up, it’s true to say that not every goal felt right, or earned. 'Pure Shot', as it has been dubbed, seeks to address this shortcoming. Strikers now seek to adjust their angle and stride pattern, where possible, to hit the ball as cleanly as they can.

In additions to enhancements to gameplay mechanics, EA Sports has brought a whole new dimension to Career Mode. New to the game is the Global Scouting Network, which gives players the chance to develop and refine a scouting network to bring them new talent from across the world the whole year round.

There have, of course, been tweaks and changes to the online offering, too, including changes to Ultimate Team, a new online mode and new features for Football Club.

And don't forget the 500 officially licensed clubs!

  • FIFA 15

    FIFA 15

The beautiful game is back, and with the 2014/2015 football season now well underway, Electronic Arts has another FIFA game for fans to dig their studs into. This year, the latest iteration of the game isn't about big, flashy updates attempting to overhaul the game. Rather, it's about focusing on the series' core gameplay and making the tweaks and refinements that might not seem huge to the casual observer, but to the hardcore fan will be hugely evident. EA has really doubled down on maintaining the pedigree that has made FIFA the dominant soccer game over the last few years.

The new bells and whistles EA is touting include (as ever) improved graphics, with pitches that show wear and tear over the course of the match and improved player visuals. There's also the inclusion of the Turkish league and 'emotional intelligence' that delivers greater authenticity in how players react to the on-pitch action.

On the pitch, though, players will notice other changes that might not be as obvious on the game's surface, but run a lot deeper. Defenders now turn with greater deliberateness and are more likely to catch attackers rather than standing around and looking nonplussed. Similarly, AI is better on the attack. Your players will burst into space on the overlap for a return ball without your prompting. You can also pick up control of the reciever of a goal kick, corner, throw-in or free kick, meaning you don't have to just hoof the ball in and hope your team makes the best of it.

It's these new tweaks - tweaks that will keep on surprising you hours after you've fired up the game - that will make all the difference for FIFA fans, building on what's already gaming's premier football series.

    FIFA Street

FIFA Street returns with panache and the kind of rapid soccer that can't be achieved with bigger sports titles. It comes from the creators of the “full” EA SPORTS FIFA franchise, but is set away from large stadia and massive crowds.

The game requires tight and accurate control but brings fun as well as urban environments and authentic branded gear. It also has a big and modern music tracklist.

Like EA Sports' other soccer titles, Street makes use of the FIFA gameplay engine, but also introduces the “Street Ball Control” system to enable the player to experience street dribbling styles and trick moves in one-on-one battles.

Street enables the player to attempt to achieve close-controlled “panna” after “pann”as they would in the Netherlands, as well as playing physical possession football that way the game is played in the UK.

The game brings playable environment as diverse as parking lots all the way up to professional 5v5 Futsal-style tournaments in some spectacular cities in more than 35 locations around the world.

Street uses a variety of playing styles including “Street Dribble” which builds on FIFA 12’s Precision Dribbling, enabling players in position to face opponents at any moment and to use close dribble touches in tight spaces even while fending off opponents.

In fact, more than 50 new skill moves have been added to the new FIFA Street. Also included are over 100 different styles, tricks & celebrations. 225 additional items can also be unlocked including team kits, street wear, boots, environments and teams.

Online gamers can play in the World Tour, a connected, social game mode that lets the gamer recreate themselves in-game as well as building their own team players to compete against others in tournaments and challenges. These let the player progress from local tournaments to the Street Football World Championship.

Using their own team creations gamers can compete online in 5v5, 6v6 or futsal matches in ranked online play with seasons, promotions, and relegation over 10 games per season in promotion races and relegation battles.

There are, in fact, some 16 different tournaments to compete in and 20 street challenges. Completing these successfully enables players to include real-world street footballers, or stars real-world clubs in their teams.

As well as tournaments, gamers can play with or against 1-4 players with varying game rules including Panna Rules (score by kicking the ball through your opponent’s legs), Entertainment Points (win by entertaining the crowds), and Last Man Standing (score and lose a man).

There is also plenty of opportunity to capture video of your best tricks and share it in-game with friends in your network. Plus, track and compare you and your friends progress in tournaments, challenges and Online Seasons through Friends Leaderboards, and follow each other’s status in EA SPORTS Football Club.

With another season of American Football we get a new iteration of Electronic Arts' Madden NFL series.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is the cover star this year and, appropriately, a renewed focus has been placed on defence. When a player takes control of a defender they'll see a cone representing their field of vision and be able to make a call as to whether to make a conservative tackle or go bigger to force a fumble. Likewise, the defensive AI has been upgraded and the best players won't be easily evaded.

On the offensive side, plays can now be sorted by personnel, scheme or even concept. Novices can even get advice on what plays to run based on their history and the tendencies of their opponents.

Connected Franchise mode returns, enabling players to join a team as a superstar player, coach or owner. Madden Ultimate Team is available again, with players building their own squad based on collectible cards.

  • NBA 2K13

    NBA 2K13

The National Basketball Assocation returns to the UK with 2K’s iteration of its NBA title for the 2013.

The big change this time around is that the single-player 'My Player' mode has been reduced in scope - this time it’s just about creating the gamer’s rookie basketball star, and then to the customisation that you can carry out over the course of his life.

Added is My Career in which the gamer takes their newly created proto-star from way down on the roster all the way up to the bright lights and huge, huge deals in the big league itself.

As a side point, the game also features the talents of Canadian crooner Justin Bieber as a playable character, and the production skills of Jay-Z himself.

Back to gameplay, and all of the 30 NBA teams are involved along with the stars - many of whom have been given updated facial renders for added realism. Also included is the 'My Team' mode enabling full team management of the gamer's favourite NBA team. If that’s not enough of a challenge, there is also the chance to take classic teams such as the 1965 Boston Celtics through their paces... or pacers.

Also included is a cracking soundtrack including the following:

The Hours - "Ali in the Jungle"
Too Short - "Blow The Whistle (Main)"
    Eric B. and Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"
    Phoenix – "1901"
Jay-Z - "Pump It Up (Freestyle)"
Puff Daddy and the Family - "Victory" (feat. The Notorious B.I.G. & Busta Rhymes)
Daft Punk - "Around the World (Radio Edit)"
Santigold - "Shove It" (feat. Spank Rock)
Jay-Z - "Run This Town" (feat. Kanye West & Rihanna)
Dirty Projectors - "Stillness is the Move"
Nas - "The World Is Yours"
    Coldplay - "Viva La Vida"
Roy Ayers - "We Live in Brooklyn, Baby"

    NBA 2K14

There is a danger that, devoid of anything by way of competition, the NBA 2K series could fall victim to complacency. Fortunately, that doesn't look to be the case.

Part of 2K14's success is thanks to the developers at Visual Concepts having the core basketball mechanics down pat. Fast breaks, for example, are fun to pull off but not overly common or exploitable. You won't just be able to hammer away down the court for easy hoops. Thank a defensive upgrade for that.

The much-requested Crews game mode is back, enabling players to get together using their MyPlayers and face off against other teams. So is MyTeam, with new player modes, multi- and single-player tournaments.

One of the great features of playing in the 21st century is the inclusion of Dynamic Living Rosters. Powered by Stats Inc, this means that player attributes and tendencies are constantly updating so that players are giving up-to-the-minute authentic performances. If a player's having a hot or cold streak in the real-life NBA, it could have an impact on your game!

A soundtrack picked by LeBron James that includes the likes of JAY Z, Eminem, The Black Keys and Daft Punk doesn't hurt, either.

    NBA 2K15

The very first thing NBA 2K15 has you do when you fire the game up is... well, play a game. You don't choose your team, there's no commentary. It's just you and the court. While there's no doubt a practical reason for this - something loading in the background, perhaps - it's a bold start to the game. 'This is it', 2K is telling you. Here are the bones of this thing.

What you'll notice there is that movement has been tightened up. It feels slick. Shifting your momentum, faking, floating the ball over a defender, it all feels great. Handling the ball feels more intuitive and the fine movements allocated to the right analogue stick are much more reliable now. This fine-tuning means that, particularly on the offensive, you can pull off smarter moves with more confidence when it comes to the execution.

As you'd expect, everything looks better than it did in NBA 2K14, and the game is creeping ever-closer to being mistakable for a real televised game of basketball.

Create-a-player has been expanded on, with more options than ever. Everything from skin tone to eyebrow shape can be tinkered with.

MyCareer has been changed a little, too. Now undrafted players are looking to get 10 day contracts that will give them chance to impress clubs and find a home, meaning they'll get chance to see more of the NBA than in previous years. A number of NBA pros have even lent their voices to the game, making scenes in MyCareer more immersive than ever. As an added bonus, you can take your player online now!

For all the added bells and whistles, though, NBA 2K15 is really about playing a tighter game of basketball than ever before.

You can use the Skill Stick during play to tap into a number of advanced moves to give your skater the edge.

EA Sports Hockey IQ is a brand new system that governs the AI of the computer opponent. In NHL 13, this means that the opposing team will focus on skaters other than the one in control of the puck - moving towards potential passing players, protecting goals, and trying to second-guess your attack.

As well as an immersive ice hockey/brawler simulation, NHL 13 also adds many community features to the mix. GM Connected allows you to form the ultimate fantasy league with your friends online. You can manage and participate in matches for your own 30-team NHL tournament, and you can even use mobile apps to track your progress while you’re away from your console.

    NHL 14

NHL 14 comes with a raft of powerful new features set to bring players ever closer to the raw aggression of the ice!

For starters, the collision physics have been enhanced to make the hits more true to life than ever! And the so-called Player Impact Engine comes with a real pedigree - it was created for none other than FIFA 14.

Another improvement that comes courtesy of another title in the EA Sports stable is the Enforcer Engine. It hails from the technology behind the Fight Night franchise, so you might be able to guess where this is going. For the first time ever there's unbroken continuity from the drop of the gloves right to the trip to the penalty box, meaning you really get to live out the action in fights on the ice. There's also real differentiation in size and strength and new jostling mechanics at play.

Other enhancements you'll see on the ice include over 1,000 new animations added to the series' true performance skating and one-touch dekes, which allow for faster and more intuitive dekes.

Also in there is Live the Life, the new incarnation of the Be a Pro mode and a new promotion and relegation system for Hockey Ultimate Team and Hockey League. Plenty of big action for hockey fans!
