    Band Hero

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Ever see your big brother or sister play Guitar Hero and wanted a piece of the action, but with songs that you'd rather play to? Well, here comes Band Hero, a spinoff from the hugely popular music game series that features a ton of more radio-friendly artists. Chart-topping favourites such as Taylor Swift, No Doubt, Lily Allen, The All-American Rejects and the Jackson 5 can be found in this bundle of happy musical joy.

Feel free to jump in and out of play as you please, with a seamless gameplay mechanic that allows would-be singers to start their role even after a song has been chosen by the band, by a simple button press. And you may find you'll need all the help you can get, as Band Hero's RockFest mode challenges players with tasks of varying difficulty that can be accomplished with four players locally and eight players when jamming online.

Tons of rewards are yours to obtain if you're good enough. Capturing 'Band Moments' - nailing important sequences in the song with pinpoint accuracy - will earn you multipliers and really gets the crowd going, as you truly feel like you're part of a big bad band!

And you can keep the music going too, with the ability to download additional content. Any Guitar Hero World Tour music that you've downloaded will work in Band Hero, with all the added bells and whistles that this new game introduces too. And the reintroduction of the Guitar Hero Music Studio lets you create your own songs and share them online too.

Controllers from past Guitar Hero games can be used with Band Hero, and if you're wanting to start a band from scratch you can also purchase a bundle pack including all the plastic replica music equipment you need. Get your sisters, brothers, parents and grannies and 'rock'-- er, 'pop' the world!

    Dance Central

    Rhythm  >  Dance
Everybody dance now! Harmonix, the developer behind the music rhythm blockbuster Rock Band, has taken its talents to the dancefloor and created Dance Central for the Xbox 360's Kinect peripheral. If you've ever felt like you have two left feet, this will let you get funky with the music in the comfort of your own home. You might even be able to take some of those moves to the club!

The Kinect camera sensor detects your presence and rates you on your ability to match dancing cues on the screen. There's no controller involved, it's just you and your ability to swing. If you're not that hot though, there's a range of difficulty levels that provide authentic choreography for each song.

If you really want to analyse a track, hit the Break It Down mode to learn each and every nuance. There are over 600 dance moves to perfect here, and with the Perform It mode you can build up your skills and combine different moves to become a dance master!

The best part is that you're not alone! Get a friend involved and boogie down together, or grab a crowd and have them decorate the background as you take centre stage. And with a range of songs spanning Lady Gaga, No Doubt, M.I.A., Bell Biv Devoe and more, you'll be a dancefloor superstar in no time at all.

  • Dance Central 2

    Dance Central 2

    Rhythm  >  Dance
Some would say that Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360 was made for dance/rhythm games. The first version of Dance Central seemed to prove that. This second version continues the theme. Developed by Harmonix Dance Central 2 adds new simultaneous multiplayer and all-new routines to the already successful mix.

For example, Dance Central’s original Break-It-Down mode enables dancers to learn those moves bit by bit but this time enables voice commands.

The multiplayer modes include teaming up in Perform It mode – or competition in the head-to-head in a simultaneous dance off within Dance Battle. Both modes have full drop-in and drop-out at any point during a song.

Owners of the first Dance Central game can import all their tracks into this new game for a nominal fee, and Dance Central 2 has a fully integrated in-game Music Store to enable gamers to add more tunes to the tracklist – with 100 available at launch.

New characters are also added into the mix with the sporty Emilia joining with new character Bodie to form the RipTide duo. At the same time fan favourite b-boy Mo joins up with the new face and stylings of Glitch to form the Hi-Def crew.

All this, of course, depends on the tracklist. Here it is in full:

  • Disney Sing It

    Disney Sing It

Could Karaoke games be the new platformers? It's just possible. Sony has the SingStar franchise, Konami has Karaoke Revolution and Microsoft is on board with Lips. While each of those games has their audiences, however, they don't present the family-focussed catalogue provided by Disney's Sing It.

Disney has, let's face it, a roster of artists and shows made for this genre. Drawing on the catalogue provided by the Disney Channel's original series and movies, Sing It boasts the talents of, among others, Camp Rock, High School Musical, Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus, Jesse McCartney and Aly & AJ. There are a total of 35 tracks on offer right off the disc, with more offered for download via Xbox Live.

The format will be familiar to anyone who's warbled along to a karaoke game before – the appropriate music video does its thing in the background while the lyrics float across the screen and players try to match the pitch, which is shown off by a coloured pitch bar. To make sure players get a unique Disney experience, however, there are seven skins from favourite Disney shows and artists to choose from.

To get the whole family involved there are a handful of multi-player modes, including duet, player versus player, and team play.

For those whose crooning leaves something to be desired, there's also a selection of vocal exercises that show players how pros perfect their art.

Disney's Sing It offers players of all ages the opportunity to embarrass themselves in front of the whole family. Thanks, Disney!

  • Guitar Hero 5

    Guitar Hero 5

    Rhythm  >  Timing
By now, everyone knows what to expect from the latest version of the game that popularised console music games. In the extremely unlikely case that you are not familiar with the series, firstly, welcome back from what must have been a quite protracted visit to another planet, but let us explain. Guitar Hero involves playing along to popular music songs on a USB guitar peripheral that comes bundled with the game (or not, for users who already have one). You have to hit and hold notes on button on the USB guitar fretboard in time with the notes in the song. Hitting a series of notes increases your score multiplier, missing notes will drop your performance meter, and if you do it repeatedly you will get booed off stage.

As you would expect, GH5 does not re-write a winning formula, but instead adds to it with new songs, and artists. This time there are 85 songs by 83 different artists, and as is typical of Guitar Hero games, several of the artists are rendered in 3D for you to play when performing their songs. These include Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana and Shirley Manson of Garbage. The big news is that GH5 features songs by Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain is also one of the 3D avatars. There is also an character editor, but 360 users can also import and use their XBox live avatar.

Other improvements to the latest version of Guitar Hero mean that players can now us the drums and microphone controllers from Guitar Hero World Tour as well as the traditional guitar. They can also jump in and play without spending as long in the game's menu system. Both the single career mode and competitive multi-player modes have been enhanced. In "Party Play" mode players can jump into a band or drop out in the middle of a song. Instruments and difficulty levels can be changed mid-song.

"RockFest" can be played by up to four players locally or up to eight online. Rockfest enables players to create a playlist, and play each song in one of the following modes:
"Momentum" gradually increases the game difficulty, and enables players to score more points as difficult increases but will fall back in difficulty if the player miss three notes in a row. In "Streakers" mode, points are awarded for successfully hitting a sequence of consecutive notes, longer streaks iv higher scores. "Perfectionist" mode ranks players by the percentage of notes hit on each section of a song. "Do or Die" mode kicks a player out until the end of the section if they fluff three notes. "Elimination" kicks the lowest scoring player at the end of each section. "Pro Face-Off" is a straightforward score attack mode, with the highest score winning.

GH5 features the Music Studio mode, which enables player to create their own songs, and share them using the GHTunes on-line service. This has been enhanced to enable users to create songs up to 10 minutes long, and upload up to 50 songs.

  • Guitar Hero Live

    Guitar Hero Live

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Developed by FreeStyleGames, the studio behind the critically-acclaimed DJ Hero and DJ Hero 2, Guitar Hero Live introduces two powerful ways to play, including GH Live, a first-person point of view where you are up on stage as the star of the show. A quantum leap forward in immersion and realism, GH Live is a live-action experience that delivers the full emotional roller coaster of being on stage and performing in a real band, in front of real crowds, who dynamically react in real-time to how well or poorly you play. As the lead guitarist, you play an array of songs that span the changing musical landscape, in a variety of venues, from the smallest club stage in front of a hundred people, to the massive main stage of an outdoor festival in front of a hundred thousand people.

Guitar Hero Live also introduces GHTV, the world's first playable music video network. GHTV is a 24-hour mode that lets fans play along to a continually-updated collection of official music videos - across a wide variety of genres - from the newest releases to favourite hits. Fans can pick from multiple channels and themed shows, discovering new songs as they play, and can also choose songs to play on-demand. In GHTV, fans can also play with their friends in the same room and against players from around the world to see who has the highest score on a given song, while completing challenges along the way. GHTV is a living, breathing platform that serves as an ever-growing source for new music discovery while further bringing the party atmosphere back to the living room.

Guitar Hero Live enhances the gameplay experience by introducing a modern, redesigned guitar controller, featuring two rows of three buttons that better reflects the way people naturally play. The new format ensures fun for players of all abilities. For beginners, you can feel like a rock star by mastering play with just the bottom three buttons. Medium-level players don't have to stretch their fingers down the neck of the guitar controller anymore and can instead skillfully play two-row combinations that mimic real chords. Experienced players have a new challenge in creating complex chord-like shapes and finger combinations that will bring new thrills to veterans. This simple innovation makes it easier for beginners to play and harder for veterans to master.

Music variety is at the heart of the game. Guitar Hero Live takes the approach of the modern music festival, with rock, folk, EDM, hip-hop, country and pop acts sharing the same stage. The game will feature hundreds of playable songs from a diverse array of artists, including The Black Keys, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Gary Clark, Jr., Green Day, Ed Sheeran, The War on Drugs, The Killers, Skrillex, The Rolling Stones, The Lumineers, Carrie Underwood, Pierce the Veil and Blitz Kids.

  • Guitar Hero Metallica

    Guitar Hero Metallica

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Despite what you may think of them as individuals, Metallica as a whole is a phenomenal rock band, a bunch of scruffy herberts from the Bay Area thrash scene of the early to mid 1980's made (better than) good. Metallica 'arrived' a long time ago (Master of Puppets really did it for us, if you're asking) but made it overground - so to speak - in the early 1990's with the release of the self-titled 'black' album, the one that included 'Enter Sandman', 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Wherever I May Roam' among others, all included on Guitar Hero: Metallica (GHM).

This dedicated variation on the GH formula features oodles of Metalli-tracks of course, but also includes a whole bunch of guest artists chosen by Messrs Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett and Trujillo, all listed at the end of this summary. Building upon the foundations laid by 2008's critically-acclaimed Guitar Hero World Tour, GHM provides the full band experience of vocals, guitar, bass guitar and drums so that you can rock out as Metallica, Queen, Corrosion of Conformity, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Diamond Head and more. No Megadeth, however...

As well as 'joining' the band in Career mode, there are a few more tweaks and extras in store for GHM players. After nailing a song, you can test your Metallica know-how by replaying the song with Metalli-facts Trivia pop-up mode, in which you can unlock venues, songs, commentary, videos and behind the scenes footage. Plus, GHM cranks up all the great features, gameplay and fun of Guitar Hero World Tour to a new level with updates to the music studio featuring real guitar samples from James Hetfield. Online modes enable gamers to see who's top of the pops in Battle of the Bands and Battle modes, along with Face-off and Pro Face-off modes. To make things even more challenging for the aspiring Lars in all of us, there's even a facility for a second bass drum pedal. Think 'Dyer's Eve', think the closing minutes of 'One'...like we said, challenging.

Here's the full list of Metallica songs included:

    'All Nightmare Long'
    'Battery'
    'Creeping Death'
    'Disposable Heroes'
    'Dyers Eve'
    'Enter Sandman'
    'Fade To Black'
    'Fight Fire With Fire'
    'For Whom The Bell Tolls'
    'Frantic'
    'Fuel'
    'Hit The Lights'
    'King Nothing'
    'Master of Puppets'
    'Mercyful Fate'
    'No Leaf Clover'
    'Nothing Else Matters'
    'One'
    'Orion'
    'Sad But True'
    'Seek And Destroy'
    'The Memory Remains'
    'The Shortest Straw'
'The Thing That Should Not Be'
    'The Unforgiven'
    'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)'
    'Wherever I May Roam'
    'Whiplash'

    And the guest stars:

Alice In Chains - 'No Excuses'
Bob Seger - 'Turn The Page (Live)'
    Corrosion of Conformity - 'Albatross'
Diamond Head - 'Am I Evil?'
    Foo Fighters - 'Stacked Actors'

Michael Schenker Group - 'Armed and Ready'
    Motörhead - 'Ace of Spades'

  • Guitar Hero Van Halen

    Guitar Hero Van Halen

    Rhythm  >  Timing
There's no denying the power Guitar Hero has over people. Pick up that plastic axe and all of a sudden nothing else matters except you and the music. And the band, of course. Until you have a bust-up over groupies and 'artistic differences' of course.

Van Halen is the latest band to star in a special edition of the make-believe rocking game, and it makes sense given that their hair metal in the 1980s was something to both admire and fear. Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen join David Lee Roth to digitally rock (and be rocked – by you) with over 25 of the band's greatest hits. Yes, 'Jump' is on there.

If you've ever played a Guitar Hero game, you'll know what to expect – grab some friends, form a band and go on a world tour to earn sponsorships and gigs at bigger and badder venues. Although this is a Van Halen title, there are other appearances from other musicians including Lenny Kravitz, Weezer, Queen and Blink-182 to compliment the roster of songs from the headlining band.

When you're not on tour, you can check out facts about Van Halen, as well as play against others online. You can do this via the quick and easy Quickplay mode, or try the Face-Off, Pro Face-Off, Battle and even the eight-player “Battle of the Bands” mode. Just like in other Guitar Hero games too, you can create and share your own tracks in the Music Studio.

    Guitar Hero: Aerosmith

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Once upon a time there was a little-known band. They played in small venues. They practised in garages. A few people liked them. In the band were chaps going by the names of Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer. You might have heard of them. They're Aerosmith. They didn't stick with the small venues for too long.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is your opportunity to relive the Aerosmith experience, rocking with the band right from their early days through to their days of superstardom. As you pick up the guitar of Perry or Whitford, or the bass of Hamilton you'll play through a bevy of Aerosmith hits and tracks from other bands who have played with or inspired Tyler and his crew. Included in the game are the likes of Walk This Way, Pink, Love in an Elevator and Sweet Emotion.

As is the Guitar Hero way, the game is played with a guitar peripheral, with players having to keep time with the song as chords scroll across the screen. With this being an Aerosmith entry into the series... well, you can guess what kind of graphics feature on the guitar peripheral being offered up with this one.

It's time to rock. You won't want to miss a thing...

    Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Activision's Guitar Hero started a gaming revolution when it first hit our screens in 2005. The intervening years have seen a host of imitators, but they have also seen a range of new and improved Guitar Hero games. As time has passed, Guitar Hero has progressed (after a little push from Rock Band) from just being an axe wielding game to being a full band game. Guitar Hero Greatest Hits aims to bring users favourite tracks from previous games up to date by giving them the very latest Guitar Hero gaming treatment, and a selection of interface enhancements to make playing the game easier and more immediate.

So Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits gathers 48 tracks that users maybe familiar with from Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

All these classic tracks will benefit from Guitar Hero's improved guitar action - the game now supports hammer on and pull-off, sustained notes and three note chords, and the tracks have been reworked to take advantage of these improvements. Early Guitar Hero games used cover tracks too, but as later games began to use the original artist tracks, Guitar Hero Greatest Hits replaces cover tracks with master tracks.

The tracks in Guitar Hero Greatest Hits have been chosen with care to only represent the ones that four years of Guitar Hero gaming have shown to be the most fun... the party favourites that everyone likes to rock out to.

The game introduces a whole new set of venues for you to play the Greatest Hits tracks in, including the "Amazon Rain Forest," "Polar Ice Caps" and the "Grand Canyon."

Guitar Hero Greatest Hits supports user created songs from GHTunes, and enables players to create and publish their own songs from Guitar Hero Music Studio, but it does not, alas, support downloaded content from Guitar Hero World Tour.

    Rhythm  >  Timing
With all the different iterations and compilation packs released over the years, it's easy to think that the Guitar Hero formula may be getting a little bit stale. One look at Warriors of Rock will tell you otherwise – an all-new Quest Mode dictates the interesting new design style and rock-influenced presentation.

The story couldn't be better either – help the Demi-God of Rock take down “The Beast” by transforming the familiar characters of Guitar Hero into awesome monsters. Play songs in the traditional way – with a variety of instrument peripherals – to unlock these alter-egos, tackle The Beast and save the land of rock n' roll.

Alongside the legendary art style and the intriguing Quest Mode, Quickplay has been enhanced to provide 13 unique gameplay challenges for each and every song on the game's tracklist, as well as most of the importable and downloadable tracks for Guitar Hero: World Tour.

And the tracklist is the largest that has appeared on disc. Over 90 tracks are available to play right out of the box, including songs from A Perfect Circle, Aerosmith, AFI, Alice Cooper, The Cure, Def Leppard, DragonForce, Five Finger Death Punch, Foo Fighters, KISS, Metallica, Rise Against, Slipknot, Twisted Sister and ZZ Top. High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance!

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Not just the music and the fun from one High School Musical film... but from all three in one go. High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance! (with the exclamation mark no less!) features songs from each of the films. That is 29 songs to keep even the most practised at – and the biggest fan of – the tween sensation happy possibly for weeks as they hone their HSM skills.

Gamers get to play either as Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Taylor or Chad... or even as themselves if they make good use of the customisable character function within the game. In fact, once the game-owning fan has created just the right mix of talent, charisma and perk, it's time to take to the dance mat and really show off the moves.

Disney Interactive – the game studio attached to the film maker (lucky!) has ensured that High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance! Is not just compatible with its own, specially designed, dance mat (although the experience won't be complete without it!). In other words - the game can be used with a wide variety of other such peripherals.

All that not enough? Well, once everything has been learned to perfection, it will be time to dance off against friends (or not-so-friends!) before settling down in victory to watch the behind the scenes footage and interviews with the stars of the show!

  • Just Dance 2015

    Just Dance 2015

    Rhythm  >  Dance
Just Dance, Ubisoft's smash hit rhythm game, is back to get you moving again, however uncoordinated you might be.

For those new to the series, it's dead simple: against a backdrop of some of the year's biggest hits, the game shows you a series of dance moves on screen and then, using motion-tracking technology, rates you based on how well you can follow them.

The biggest new feature in this year's outing is Community Remix. This enables players to record themselves dancing to their favourite tracks, then upload it for the community to look at. The community then votes for their favourites, and the developers at Ubisoft will turn the best routines into a playable part of the game.

Old favourites also make a return, with the massive multiplayer mode World Dancefloor, sing-along karaoke mode and the video-creating Autodance.

The meat of any dancing game, however, is the track list. So, without any further ado, here's what's on offer:

    - "Bang Bang" - Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj
    - "She Looks So Perfect" - 5 Seconds of Summer
    - "Problem" - Ariana Grande Ft. Iggy Azalea and Big Sean

  • The Beatles: RockBand

    The Beatles: RockBand

    Rhythm  >  Timing
Pretty much everyone knows Rock Band, the game that took console music/rhythm gaming to a new level. And everyone knows the Beatles - the most successful group in the history of music. So putting the two together should be a sure fire winner...

Coming up with the idea of combining the proven gameplay of the Rock Band game and the songs that everyone knows and most people love doesn't take a genius... but it does take someone with connections, and in this case it was Dhani Harrison, son of Beatles guitarist George Harrison.

The game allows users to play guitar, bass or drums or to sing on a selection of songs taken from the twelve albums the Beatles recorded during their 1962 to 1969 period at EMI records. As in all previous Rock Band games, players must successfully hit notes in time as they scroll down the screen. Correctly hitting a note earns points for each player. If a player fails to hit a note, their performance meter will drop, and if it reaches empty the player is be forced out of the game, which reduces the band's overall score. Any player can be saved from dropping out by another player, if they activate "BeatleMania", which is called "Overdrive" in the normal Rock Band games. BeatleMania is earned by successfully completing specially-marked parts of the songs. BeatleMania can also be used to temporarily increase your band's scoring.

Like previous Rock Band games, there is a career mode, though rather than creating a fictional band with an imaginary career, the Story Mode takes you through the Beatles career. As a result, you'll get to play in such exalted venues as including The Cavern Club, the set of the Ed Sullivan Show, Shea Stadium, Abbey Road Studios and the roof of the Apple Corps offices at 3 Savile Row. The most obvious new feature of Beatles: Rock Band is the introduction of multipart vocals, and players can earn extra points for singing in harmony.

Rock Band: Beatles is compatible with existing Rock Band instruments, and other music controllers and will ship as a stand alone game. There will also be version available with its own custom controllers, styled as the Beatles own instruments. Unlike some other games in the Rock Band series, Beatles is not an expansion pack, and the songs are not cross compatible with other versions of the game. But the game includes 45 tracks, and additional songs will be available as downloadable content for Beatles: Rock Band, including All You Need is Love, the proceeds of which are to be donated to Medicines Sans Frontiers.
