  • Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition

    Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition

After setting a phenomenal trend on PC and selling tremendously well on Xbox Live Arcade, MojangÆs incredibly addictive world-creation game Minecraft has made the jump to physical media!

The charm of Minecraft is in its crude, blocky graphics. As you wander about a seemingly empty map, you soon learn to use your trusty pickaxe to chisel away the environment around you. Doing so not only allows you to rebuild the entire map as you see fit, but can also throw up a number of interesting surprises.

Create buildings, caverns, landmarks... youÆre only limited by your imagination. If you like, you can invite a bunch of friends along to help you build a masterpiece worthy of showing the entire world. But be quick about it, because at night monsters come out to play, so you need to make sure that you have made preparations for you (and your friends) to stay safe until dawn.

The PlayStation 4 Edition comes with its own set of features. Players can use the DualShock 4's touchpad to navigate menus and craft, and of course they can use the console's social features to share their creations with friends! PlayStation 3 players who've upgraded to a PS4 won't be left out in the cold, either - they'll be able to transfer their saves to the new generation version.

  • Evolve

    Evolve

To say that Evolve comes with a pedigree is an understatement. Coming from Left4Dead developers and horror co-op luminaries Turtle Rock, Evolve is a shoot-'em-up with a difference. The game pits four players against one monster. While you're teaming up against the monster, you'll be playing the game from a first-person perspective. The real twist, however, is that you can also play as the monster itself, taking things into a third-person mode and massively changing the way you play. As a hunter, teamwork is key. There are four different classes (Trapper, Support, Assault and Medic) and putting together the right group to combine those different skill sets is crucial if you want to succeed. Of course, given that you can step into any number shooters and start... well, shooting things, it will be playing as the monsters that will be the big draw for some. Needless to say, Turtle Rock has an interesting array of nastiness for you to control. Take, for example, the Wraith. This horrible creation has a nasty habit of teleporting along lines of sight. Spinning out of this are a disorienting abduction abilitity and the warp blast. In addition, there's the decoy move, which produces a hologram to further disorientate your enemies. Or perhaps you prefer the beefed-up Goliath, or the Cthulu-esque Kraken... While the core of the game is men versus monsters, don't forget about the environment. The planet Shear is hostile to man and beast alike. While Evolve is certainly a multiplayer game at heart, there is the option to play solo if your friends are busy and you don't fancy playing with strangers. Capable AI can take on the role of the other combatants, and if you're playing as a hunter you can swap into the role of one of your teammates at any time. But, while AI is all well and good, it's the player that's the real monster in Evolve...

  • Destiny

    Destiny

There are few games that arrive on shop shelves and console dashboards with the weight of quite so much expectation as Destiny. The game is Halo creator Bungie's first new intellectual property since Combat Evolved graced the original Xbox, and it's multi-platform to boot. The game stays true to Bungie's DNA. It blends epic science fiction with grand visuals and fast-paced first-person-shooter action. Players are the Guardians of the last city on Earth. In their quest to keep the remnants of humanity safe, they walk the ancient ruins of our solar system - from the red dunes of Mars to the dense jungles of Venus. Wielding epic power, they must fight humanities enemies to attempt to reclaim what was lost when man's Golden Age fell. What may excite Bungie fans the most, however, is the promise of Destiny's multiplayer aspect. Blending aspects of MMO gaming into what the developer is calling a 'shared world shooter', the game will match players to each other on the fly. Sometimes the result will be co-operative play, sometimes it will be the opportunity to engage in the competitive multiplayer Bungie is famed for, sometimes it will give players the opportunity to visit a shared social space. A huge array of customisation options for your character that cover both your look and your abilities will mean that no two characters will be the same, and it all comes with you through every mode. With a persistent world that exists beyond the realms of the disc that comes in the box, however, players can expect that Destiny will always be shifting and changing around them.

  • DRIVECLUB

    DRIVECLUB

    Racing  >  Car
DriveClub is nuts. Evolution Studios wants to dazzle you with jazzy presentation right from the off, in an attempt to make the art of arcade racing a bit more exciting. If a PlayStation Eye is connected, you'll be able to take a photo of your ugly mug - the first step in what is being called a Social Racing Experience. You pick a car, as well as a driving 'style' and tackle a course. All sounds pretty normal, until you start playing. It's not just lap times you're competing for, you see. On occasion, DriveClub will throw a Social Challenge at you, asking you to beat a high score set by one of your friends. These range from maintaining a top speed for a certain amount of time, to getting more drift points on a particular corner. It's not all about beating your mates, though. As the name kind of hints, players form clubs with six friends and then compete together to earn fame. Each club member's actions contribute to the club's success. Of course Evolution, known for the MotorStorm games, knows a thing or two about the actual driving side of things. The different locations ooze atmosphere and the weather is more than just an aethetic effect. If you're racing in Scotland and a downpour starts, the performance of your vehicle can turn on a dime, getting looser and less predictable. While the PS4 won't have a Gran Turismo, a more serious approach to racing, for the first couple of years of its life, DriveClub gives the PS4 a nice, approachable and interactive way to scratch that driving itch.

  • PES 2015

    PES 2015

A new console generation seems like as good a chance as any for Konami to challenge FIFA once again for the top spot in footy videogaming.

Built (perhaps a little surprisingly) using Kojima Productions' FOX engine, physicality underpins Pro Evolution Soccer 2015. Its rival, perhaps thanks to its impressive graphical finish, has the reputation as the most simulator-like game of the pair. But, if you really poke at PES 2015, its mechanics are defined by the push and pull of realistic play.

Going shoulder to shoulder with a computer controlled player, for example, will force the AI to second guess whether it can hang onto the ball. It might power through or it might try to change direction and go for a pass. What it will definitely do, though, is react. It's this reactive AI that runs through the heart of PES 2015.

The developers over at PES Productions Team have worked over both goalkeeping and shooting to up the realism at those key moments, too.

The game has been given a graphical overhaul, too. Slicker animations can be seen on the pitch, while crowd animations have also been improved and will better reflect the ebb and flow of the match. That's all brought together by an overhaul of the lighting, which now all comes from one source, adding a more natural feel to the game.

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

    Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes the stellar blockbuster franchise and shifts it in a new direction. The biggest change for fans of the Call of Duty series will be the fact that for the first time, development isn't led by series veterans Infinity Ward or Treyarch, but by relative newcomer Sledgehammer Games. With a new team comes a somewhat new direction. While Call of Duty: Black Ops II pushed things into the near future of 2025, Advanced Warfare takes things further. The game puts players in the futuristic gear of Jack Mitchell. It's a future where the world has been devastated by a global attack and Atlas, a Private Military Corporation, is effectively a superpower for hire. Activision has gone to pains to state that this is a carefully researched future, so don't expect black hole guns or laser blasters. The most immediate impact of this premise, then, is the exoskeleton players wear. This piece of kit enhances the player's movement with bigger leaps, dashes and dodges. The exoskeleton, along with the futuristic weaponry on offer, changes the way gamers will play Call of Duty, and of course that extends to the game's multiplayer. All of this is polished off with a revamped Create-a-Class feature, offering the deepest customisation options in a Call of Duty game yet.

  • FIFA 15

    FIFA 15

The beautiful game is back, and with the 2014/2015 football season now well underway, Electronic Arts has another FIFA game for fans to dig their studs into. This year, the latest iteration of the game isn't about big, flashy updates attempting to overhaul the game. Rather, it's about focusing on the series' core gameplay and making the tweaks and refinements that might not seem huge to the casual observer, but to the hardcore fan will be hugely evident. EA has really doubled down on maintaining the pedigree that has made FIFA the dominant soccer game over the last few years. The new bells and whistles EA is touting include (as ever) improved graphics, with pitches that show wear and tear over the course of the match and improved player visuals. There's also the inclusion of the Turkish league and 'emotional intelligence' that delivers greater authenticity in how players react to the on-pitch action. On the pitch, though, players will notice other changes that might not be as obvious on the game's surface, but run a lot deeper. Defenders now turn with greater deliberateness and are more likely to catch attackers rather than standing around and looking nonplussed. Similarly, AI is better on the attack. Your players will burst into space on the overlap for a return ball without your prompting. You can also pick up control of the reciever of a goal kick, corner, throw-in or free kick, meaning you don't have to just hoof the ball in and hope your team makes the best of it. It's these new tweaks - tweaks that will keep on surprising you hours after you've fired up the game - that will make all the difference for FIFA fans, building on what's already gaming's premier football series.

  • The Order: 1886

    The Order: 1886

Long-awaited as a showcase of the PlayStation 4's capabilities, The Order 1886 thrusts players back into an alternate vision of Victorian London. It's a London in which technology and myth exist side by side, and an elite order of knights fight a centuries-old war that has shaped - and will continue to shape - the flow of history. The game really makes use of the war's history - it stretches back through the time of King Arthur, when a mysterious liquid called the Black Water that extends a human's lifespan was discovered. As such the knights in question bear some names you might recognise from Arthurian legend - Galahad and Percival, for example. Being long-lived isn't necessarily a big enough advantage to fight the half-beasts on the other side, however, and players will need to use this alternate history's strange technology if they want to win the day. Nothing is quite what you'd expect in this Victorian London. Zeppelins already haunt the skies, while thermal imaging and wireless communication affect how the world unfolds before the player. Weapons unleash electricity, drop clouds of molten metal onto foes and act as frag grenades and proximity mines. All of this comes without the game losing its Victorian feel. It oozes atmosphere, with a filmic quality and a dark pall that matches the game's grim stakes. The Order 1886 is a game that promises to really show what the PlayStation 4 can offer.

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition

    Dragon Age: Inquisition

While Dragon Age Origins was hailed by many as a new tour-de-force from famed roleplaying game developer BioWare, many felt that the sequel didn't live up to its predecessor's strong start. Inquisition, though, has been widely hailed as a return to form. An apocalyptic event has thrown Thedas into chaos, opening rifts that are raining down terror. Dragons ravage the sky, casting dark shadows across the land. Mages are in a state of all-out war against the Templars. Nations are warring. Into this chaos you must step, using your strange ability to close rifts and banish demons. The world is bigger and more open than ever before, so players looking to explore are in for a treat. This is a huge game, packed with epic hubs and tons of side content. BioWare says that it will take over 100 hours to complete everything. It's appropriate, as this is the biggest Dragon Age story yet. For players new to the series, or those jumping to a new platform (or even those who don't feel happy with decisions they made in the last two games) EA has an online tool that can be used to select details from earlier games in the series and apply them to your save file. On the combat front, BioWare has drawn on both the previous games in the series, pulling together the more strategic feel or Origins with the action focus of the sequel. The result is combat that has weight, but won't enable players to thrash around like they're beating up angels in Bayonetta. Adding to that is a multiplayer option. It's a co-op mode that works a lot like Gears of War's Horde, forcing players to work together against wave after wave of enemies. In other words, if you're looking for something epic in scope, Dragon Age Inquisition has you covered.

  • WWE 2K15

    WWE 2K15

The next generation of WWE games has landed on our screens with WWE 2K15. The biggest change is noticeable right from the first bell. The frantic pace that wrestling fans have seen on the last few WWE games across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has been dialled back a bit. This brings a more technical element to the game. Blows feel like they carry more impact thanks to really precise collision detection, while strikes are easier to counter. That means that button mashers are less likely to get their hits through and might want to re-think their strategy. The game has been given a visual overhaul, too, with new motion capture technology brought in from the NBA 2K series and improved animations. The effect, combined with the more technical fighting mechanics means that the game is pitched more as a simulation than other recent entries to the WWE franchise. The audio's been worked on too, with more than five times the amount of commentary being a particularly notable addition. The new-generation versions of the game features the MyCareer mode, in which players create their own superstar and attempt to bring them up through the ranks to glory. The 2K Showcase mode brings emotional intensity to the game by comprehensively spotlighting two major feuds. One is the Triple H/Shawn Michaels rivalry from the early 2000s, and the other brings things closer to the present with the CM Punk/John Cena feud that ushered in the 'Reality Era' in 2011. You'll almost be able to inhale the smell of sweat on canvas...

  • LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

    LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is the most ambitious LEGO game starring the Caped Crusader yet. While it does, of course, have Batman and Robin front and centre, it could almost have been called 'LEGO DC Superheroes', such is the size of the cast and the scope of the adventure. The 'Beyond Gotham' part of the title is certainly justified. This time out, the Dark Knight is out in space on a cosmic adventure. Braniac, who's more often known for bothering Superman, has been stealing entire cities, shrinking them down using the power of Lantern rings to add them to his sinister collection. So, right off the bat (pun slightly intended) you can see that the scale of the game has been expanded since previous entries to the series, drawing on the mythos of both Green Lantern and Superman. There's a cast to match this newfound scale, with more than 150 characters ranging from icons like Wonder Woman to the lesser-known (but no less important) figures like... well, Bat-cow. Expect The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Zatanna, Lex Luthor, The Joker and Swamp Thing to name just a tiny handful. Players can unlock different versions of characters, too, like the 1960s TV Batman (voiced by Adam West!) who lifts his cape to sneak past foes, or Arctic Batman, with a freeze gun. Gameplay is, as series fans will expect, along the usual LEGO lines. There's a dash of combat, a spot of platforming, a fair amount of environmental puzzle-solving and drop-in/drop-out cooperative play. As ever, it's all delivered with a light touch and a healthy dose of humour. That's not to say there's nothing new here, however. In one level, for example, our heroes encounter a battleship belonging to the Reach and the encounter plays out as a 2D shooter, much like Resogun. Let's be honest, though, most players will come for the sense of fun and the chance to play with that HUGE cast of characters.

  • Murdered: Soul Suspect

    Murdered: Soul Suspect

When Salem police officer Ronan O'Connor is brutally murdered, his story doesn't end where it ought to. Instead, it falls on him to step back into the land of the living as a ghost and solve his own murder. To get the job done, he teams with a teenage psychic and the two get to work solving crimes by pulling together clues, interviewing witnesses (both live and dead) and getting glimpses into the past. This might sound like the premise to a slightly cheesey US TV show, but it's actually the back story to Murdered: Soul Suspect from Square Enix and developer Airtight Games. The developer has decided to play it straight, with a lot of emphasis put on the characters of hard-nosed detective O'Connor and Joy, his wise-cracking sidekick. Their partnership forms the heart of the game as you do your ghostly bit solving crimes. As O'Connor is both a ghost and a detective, he has a few handy skills at his disposal for when you reach a crime scene. As well as familiar mechanics such as finding pieces of evidence and attempting to piece them together, players can also use their ghostly abilities to glean clues from psychic residue, inhabit the minds of suspects and sense ghostly energies. Aside from the detective work, players will have other jobs to do. That might mean doing a little stealth work to deal with other ghouls or escorting in-game characters using your spooky powers. Throughout the whole game, O'Connor's intangibility means he can go just about anywhere. What are you waiting for? There are crimes to be solved!

The rabbids will come out of it, too. Using augmented reality technology, they'll actually come out into your living room for you to mix it up - or even dance - with. • FIFA 14

    FIFA 14

While FIFA 14, as the first football game of the Xbox One and PS4 era, straddles generations, there are certainly some improvements right out of the box for the next-gen versions. EA has built the brand new Ignite engine for next-gen. This includes a graphical upgrade and, more importantly, gameplay changes such as improved AI and 'True Player Motion' to make players act more realistically. On-screen players adhere more accurately than previous FIFAs to real world considerations such as weight and momentum to give a greater sense of physicality. From a gameplay perspective, expect players to have more apparent individuality than before as agility and athleticism plays more of a role in every on-field confrontation. In the heat of a match these are considerations that may not be immediately apparent, but which embellish the overall look and feel of the game for the better. For example, for the first time in the series you can properly - and gleefully - 'do' a defender, leaving him off balance and several yards in your player's wake. Fortunately for the wronged fullback, it is also now possible to burst into a sprint from standing to make up lost yards and earn the chance to heroically dispossess his humiliator. Things have improved on the offence, too. For all of the excellence of FIFAs 9 and up, it's true to say that not every goal felt right, or earned. 'Pure Shot', as it has been dubbed, seeks to address this shortcoming. Strikers now seek to adjust their angle and stride pattern, where possible, to hit the ball as cleanly as they can. In additions to enhancements to gameplay mechanics, EA Sports has brought a whole new dimension to Career Mode. New to the game is the Global Scouting Network, which gives players the chance to develop and refine a scouting network to bring them new talent from across the world the whole year round. There have, of course, been tweaks and changes to the online offering, too, including changes to Ultimate Team, a new online mode and new features for Football Club. And don't forget the 500 officially licensed clubs!

  • Saints Row IV: Re-Elected & Gat Out of Hell

Saints Row IV: Re-Elected & Gat Out of Hell

The Saints are back, in what may well be the most out-there twist a videogame sequel has ever taken. Not only that, but with this new-gen version you get an extra layer of visual polish AND yet another twist with the Gat out of Hell expansion as well as all the DLC released for the original. The head of the Saints (that's you) has gone about as far as he can go - leader of the free world. Yeah, he/she is now president of the United States of America. It sounds like a cosy gig and, in fact, it is. Until aliens invade and throw the Saints into a bizarro Steelport simulation. No, we're not kidding. Promise. Now, you've got to bust out of the simulation, repel the alien invasion and save the world or get vaporised trying. That's no mean feat, but you've got a few aces in the hole. The aces in the hole being superpowers. You'll be able to leap tall buildings and outrun sports cars, among other things. Got all that? President of America, alien invasion, superpowers. None of which means you won't be getting the Saints-style gameplay you've grown to love. You'll get a massive open world to play around in, loads of missions, all sorts of vehicles to drive, tons of havoc to wreak and a big old dose of Saints Row madness. You just get to do it all with the added bonus of aliens and superpowers now. And did we mention that there's co-op play, too? Because there is. Then, of course, there's Gat Out of Hell, just in case all the above wasn't enough. There's a bit of a clue in the title - you play as Johnny Gat, who's been sent straight to hell after a spirit board accident and now has to fight demons, famous historical figures and, of course, the very devil himself. In a nutshell, this is the open world game only the Saints Row series could deliver.

  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

    Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Numerous games have attempted to bring JRR Tolkein's Middle-earth to life, but it's a tall order and many have fallen short. Shadow of Mordor, however, strides beyond the usual film tie-ins and attempts to create a full-bodied, brand-new adventure in Tolkein's world. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor takes place somewhere that most games fear to linger. Yes, the clue's in the title. Players take on the role of Talion, a Ranger slaughtered alongside his family at the Black Gate. Resurrected, he is bound to wander Mordor. But you can't expect a resurrected warrior to take is death lying down. Sharing a body with the Elvish Wraith, Celebrimbor, he seeks vengeance... The game offers a mix of stealth and melee combat. Players will take on missions such as taking out uruk captains. They can move quietly and unseen, or tackle enemies head-on to enter Batman: Arkham style combat, rhythmically timing strikes and counter-moves to build up chains and initiate powerful executions. As you progress, you'll gain access to wraith-like powers and moves, such as teleportation. As someone who already died, Talion won't stay dead. Death comes with consequences, though. Time passes and foes grow stronger. This feeds into the nemesis system, which has enemies grow in power. If you failed to defeat them, they'll remember you. They might even bear scars from the wounds you inflicted on them. Each enemy has different strengths and weaknesses, and players can squeeze intel on these from snitches, meaning each confrontation is different. It's an interesting system, but it doesn't stop there. As the game progresses you'll be able to bend orcs to your will, quietly placing them in positions of power and gaining influence over Mordor. Shadow of Mordor might look, at first glance, like a simple stealth game/brawler, but it quickly reveals itself to be much more than that.
