Mortal Kombat X
Mortal Kombat, the classic beat-'em-up series with a preponderance for inserting the letter 'K' anywhere it can, is back. That means, of course, that players can expect more of the brutal, visceral one-on-one combat (sorry, 'kombat') that Mortal Kombat is famed for. The game follows up on the events of 2011's Mortal Kombat, but shifts us waaaay down the timeline, as far as 25 years into the characters' future. The deep, non-linear story sees Shinnock attacking Earth following the defeat of Shao Kahn. At his back is an army of Netherrealm forces, including resurrected fighters killed in Kahn's invasion and now under the control of Quan Chi. Of course, the better-natured fighters of Earth aren't going to let this stand and, naturally, lots of bloody kombat ensues. With the shift forward in time, new twists on old favourites such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Kano make return appearances. They're joined by newcomers such as Cassie Cage, Kotal Kahn, Ferra-Torr and D'Vorah, many of whom are the next generation of fighters spawned by the familiar characters of old. To beef up the roster even further, each character has playable variants. So, for example, Scorpian has a ninjutsu variation that dual-wields swords, a hellfire variant that makes use of fiery attacks and an 'inferno' version that summons hellspawn minions to do his bidding. A couple of features that have been recently added to NetherRealms' fighting games return, such as 'X-ray' special moves and the ability to use the environment as a weapon, introduced in Injustice: The Gods Among Us. There are also some brand new additions, such as 'quitalities', which instantly finish off anyone who quits out of a multiplayer game, and faction kills, finishing moves attached to each of the game's five factions (Black Dragon, the Brotherhood of Shadow, the Lin Kuei, Special Forces, and White Lotus). Mainstay modes such as Story, 1 vs 1 Ranked, King of the Hill, Survivor, and Test Your Luck are joined by a couple of fresh additions. Living Towers has evolved from Mortal Kombat's Challenge Tower, and features play conditions that change every hour. In Faction Wars players choose to play for a faction and joining a persistant online cross-platform competition. There is, of course, one thing left to say now... Finish Him!

WWE 2K15
The next generation of WWE games has landed on our screens with WWE 2K15. The biggest change is noticeable right from the first bell. The frantic pace that wrestling fans have seen on the last few WWE games across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has been dialled back a bit. This brings a more technical element to the game. Blows feel like they carry more impact thanks to really precise collision detection, while strikes are easier to counter. That means that button mashers are less likely to get their hits through and might want to re-think their strategy. The game has been given a visual overhaul, too, with new motion capture technology brought in from the NBA 2K series and improved animations. The effect, combined with the more technical fighting mechanics means that the game is pitched more as a simulation than other recent entries to the WWE franchise. The audio's been worked on too, with more than five times the amount of commentary being a particularly notable addition. The new-generation versions of the game features the MyCareer mode, in which players create their own superstar and attempt to bring them up through the ranks to glory. The 2K Showcase mode brings emotional intensity to the game by comprehensively spotlighting two major feuds. One is the Triple H/Shawn Michaels rivalry from the early 2000s, and the other brings things closer to the present with the CM Punk/John Cena feud that ushered in the 'Reality Era' in 2011. Battlefield: Hardline
Battlefield: Hardline takes the shoot-'em-up action the series is known for and moves it away from the front lines and onto city streets. Hardline adopts a cops and robbers format, pitting criminals against the police against a backdrop of fast and furious heists. It's quite a shift for a series known for hardcore military action. Visceral Games (they're new to the series, but you might know them from the Dead Space series) is aiming to shift the focus of the series, moving away from the po-faced tone many shooters have adopted in recent years and injecting a bit of vitality into the formula. The aim is to make shoot-outs more of a close quarters affair in which you'll see the whites of your opponents' eyes. As ever, multiplayer is the real focus of the game. Heist mode tasks criminals to steal and secure a briefcase from the police in a manner not dissimilar to capture the flag. In Blood Money players vie for three stashes of cash hidden about the city, transporting it back to their vault when they do. The catch is that vaults can be captured, too, and fallen players leave their cash where they die. The result is chaotic. In Hotwire mode drivable cars effectively become the flags of a conquest mode. Captured cars drain away opponents' reinforcement tickets, and the winner is the team that reduces the other lot's ticket count to zero (or whoever has the most at the end of a round). 'Rescue' is a five versus five hostage situation in which cops must rescue civilians, while 'Crosshair' is another five vs five mode in which criminals must eliminate a player-controlled VIP. While Hardline is a shift away from the usual Battlefield formula, fans can still expect widescreen action and lots of explosions. It's just time to step into a different kind of fantasy...

TitanFall
TitanFall is, first and foremost, a multiplayer first-person shooter. It's similar to the countless other FPSs out there in some aspects, but it has a very important stand-out element - it lets the player get into giant mechs and deal some Grade-A destruction. The selling point lies within the idea that both mechs and human players interact with each other on the same map, and do so in a very interesting manner. Given that TitanFall is online multiplayer only, the modes on offer are pretty important. Attrition is your run of the mill kill everything that's not your team mode. You start off on foot and the more you kill, the quicker you can request your Titan to be deployed to you. Hardpoint is the second game mode. You have to have a presence around certain points in the map and make sure that the other team doesn't get to them. This becomes a "Guard the Base" type of an event and you get points as to how successful you guard a point or capture it. The third one is a very interesting LTS or Last Titan Standing mode, where the game begins with you being inside a Titan, doesn't allow respawns if you die while on foot, and win by wiping off Titans on the other team. You might be wondering how human players can stand up against giant mech suits. The game spares no sympathy for puny humans and adheres to realism that lets you get crushed by a Titan's feet. Simply walk over enemy pilots and other AI units while piloting a Titan and that's the end of them. To balance things out, elements of parkour, and cloaking mechanisms are introduced to the pilots on foot, which in turn allow some impressive takedowns of Titans in a non-head on manner. Specialist weapons are also available for human players to combat Titans which deals a bit more damage than the average pistol/rifle/shotgun. These however, when used on other human players, simply vaporise them into a mist of blood. The Titans can be manned or left unmanned to auto engage the enemy or guard a particular spot. This gives a rather interesting freedom to the player, allowing him/her to select the sort of gameplay one wants to engage in. Pilot a Titan and rain down hell on minions, or let the Titan do its own thing while you dash about the map, getting some stealthy and quick kills!

Call of Duty: Ghosts
Infinity Ward, the creator of the Call of Duty series and the blockbuster Modern Warfare sequence of games is treating a new generation of consoles as a new opportunity. It doesn't matter what machine you're playing on, though, you're getting a brand new Call of Duty experience with Ghosts. Set in a new game universe, the events of Ghosts take place in a near future in which the US has been ravaged by a catastrophic attack and the West is on its knees. A new superpower has emerged south of the equator and is laying seige to the States. The once-mighty America now relies on an elite squad of soldiers, modeled on SEAL Team 6, to defend it. This new storyline effectively turns many of the Call of Duty series' tropes on their head. You're no longer top dog with an endless supply of state of the art weaponry behind you. You're the underdog, up against enemies with superior firepower, technology and numbers. You, however, do have a dog on your side... Multiplayer, of course, has been overhauled. The biggest addition set to shake up the more tradional multiplayer modes is the inclusion of dynamic events such as collapsing buildings. Some of these can be triggered by players, some will occur naturally. All of them will shake up the field and keep things interesting. Another notable inclusion is female soldiers, who will be playable for the first time in a Call of Duty game. Perhaps the most interesting addition to Ghosts' multiplayer offering is Squads. In it, players can design and customise their own squad and take them into combat against either other players or AI. The idea is to give you the thrills and gameplay style of multiplayer combat, but with the oversight and tactical vantagepoint of a squad commander. You don't even have to be online for your guys to get in on the action - players' squads can be challenged while they're not available. Even better, all the XP you earn can be brought back into the regular multiplayer experience with you. Infinty Ward is set to deliver yet another first-person blockbuster.

Minecraft: Xbox One Edition
After setting a phenomenal trend on PC and selling tremendously well on Xbox Live Arcade, MojangÆs incredibly addictive world-creation game Minecraft has made the jump to physical media!
The charm of Minecraft is in its crude, blocky graphics. As you wander about a seemingly empty map, you soon learn to use your trusty pickaxe to chisel away the environment around you. Doing so not only allows you to rebuild the entire map as you see fit, but can also throw up a number of interesting surprises.

Metro Redux
Metro Redux takes two bleak, twisted first-person action games and brings them to the next generation of games consoles. In Metro 2033, based on the novel of the same name, players battle in a devastated wasteland to survive. Dmitry Glukhovsky's urban tale takes place in a post-apocalyptic Moscow, where the capital's Metro train line becomes the only safe haven for humanity. With the world destroyed by an apocalyptic event, the surface of the Earth becomes uninhabitable, and those who dare to go outside must face deadly sunlight, a lack of oxygen and mutated creatures that lurk in the darkness. Presented as a first person shooter, with a hint of underground town exploration, Metro 2033 adds some interesting elements to the genre, including a reduction of the HUD and a reliance on visual cues to survive topside. Bullets double as both your ammo and as currency for purchasing better weapons. Metro: Last Light picks up the story of its predecessor and takes it in a surprising new direction. It's a first-person shooter with thought. Weapons feel weighty but never overpowering, especially when faced with some of the mutant enemies that litter the landscape - wolf-like Watchmen, creepy spider-ants, oversized piranha fish... and not forgetting the patrolmen for every human faction in Moscow, with the city currently in civil war. The two games encouraged slightly different play styles, but this repackaging cross-pollinates them. Players can take the slower, survival-horror style of 2033 and play both campaigns that way. Like-wise, the 'spartan' play style can be applied to both games for a faster, more action-heavy experience. Redux also includes the super-tough 'ranger' mode, and all the previously released DLC. All in all, it stacks up to an impressive 50 hours of FPS gameplay!

FIFA 14
While FIFA 14, as the first football game of the Xbox One and PS4 era, straddles generations, there are certainly some improvements right out of the box for the next-gen versions. EA has built the brand new Ignite engine for next-gen. This includes a graphical upgrade and, more importantly, gameplay changes such as improved AI and 'True Player Motion' to make players act more realistically. On-screen players adhere more accurately than previous FIFAs to real world considerations such as weight and momentum to give a greater sense of physicality. From a gameplay perspective, expect players to have more apparent individuality than before as agility and athleticism plays more of a role in every on-field confrontation. In the heat of a match these are considerations that may not be immediately apparent, but which embellish the overall look and feel of the game for the better. For example, for the first time in the series you can properly - and gleefully - 'do' a defender, leaving him off balance and several yards in your player's wake. Fortunately for the wronged fullback, it is also now possible to burst into a sprint from standing to make up lost yards and earn the chance to heroically dispossess his humiliator. Things have improved on the offence, too. For all of the excellence of FIFAs 9 and up, it's true to say that not every goal felt right, or earned. 'Pure Shot', as it has been dubbed, seeks to address this shortcoming. Strikers now seek to adjust their angle and stride pattern, where possible, to hit the ball as cleanly as they can. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
New Assassin's Creed games have become an annual event over the last few years. Unlike many sequels, that are mild re-workings of the previous title, each new Assassin's Creed game brings an incredible amount of new locations, characters and gameplay tactics to the table. Being set in a computer-created virtual history, the Assassins Creed franchise has the luxury to jump around both the globe and historical timeline with abandon. This time the series alights in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy - the early 18th century. As you may expect, the adventure relies heavily on the nautical battle aspects of the game that were first introduced in Assassin's Creed III. Otherwise, the game features the same free roaming, adventure combat game style that players of the series have come to love. But as usual Ubisoft has tweaked things to make it a fresh and exciting experience. The game is more open, more quickly, preventing the user having to complete too many linear missions before unlocking extra areas of the game world. This leads to a more free-roaming and exploratory game style from the beginning. As you are more victorious in combat, you will be able to use your spoils to upgrade your ship. And you'll be able to recruit your crew from captured boats, or add the vessel to your fleet. But beware, as your notoriety rises, pirate hunters will begin to try and capture you for a reward. Combat has been changed to allow for "free aiming" rather than being target-lock based. And you can carry multiple weapons and chain attacks. As usual, as well as the historical aspects of the game, there is a "present day" section, which requires the user to explore the Abstergo offices in Montreal, Canada. As you move around the offices, avoiding combat, you can eaves-drop on Abstergo employees and hack into their computer systems, to learn more about the huge conspiracy in which Desmond Miles is enmeshed.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes the stellar blockbuster franchise and shifts it in a new direction. The biggest change for fans of the Call of Duty series will be the fact that for the first time, development isn't led by series veterans Infinity Ward or Treyarch, but by relative newcomer Sledgehammer Games. With a new team comes a somewhat new direction. While Call of Duty: Black Ops II pushed things into the near future of 2025, Advanced Warfare takes things further. The game puts players in the futuristic gear of Jack Mitchell. It's a future where the world has been devastated by a global attack and Atlas, a Private Military Corporation, is effectively a superpower for hire. Activision has gone to pains to state that this is a carefully researched future, so don't expect black hole guns or laser blasters. The most immediate impact of this premise, then, is the exoskeleton players wear. This piece of kit enhances the player's movement with bigger leaps, dashes and dodges. The exoskeleton, along with the futuristic weaponry on offer, changes the way gamers will play Call of Duty, and of course that extends to the game's multiplayer. All of this is polished off with a revamped Create-a-Class feature, offering the deepest customisation options in a Call of Duty game yet.

What if the apocalypse was actually... awesome?

Most of the population is transformed into an array of mutants, aka "the OD'd". This, for many, is awful news. For you, someone who hated their job and spent far too much time playing games, watching movies and reading comics, this isn't so much awful as it is awesome. It's time for you to step up into Sunset Overdrive's epic campaign and become the hero your city so badly needs.
With amazing agility you'll leap into action in a vibrant, chaotic open world with a host of parkour moves and a huge arsenal of insane weapons. If you've played any of the Ratchet & Clank games you know that creative weaponry is one of developer Insomniac's hallmarks. Trials Fusion Deluxe
Trials is back, and this time it's... well, not gone in a direction you were likely expecting. It's set in the future. Gone are the grimy warehouses of old in favour of all sorts of futuristic newfangledness. Retro futuristic newfangledness, at that. You don't need to look any further than the title screen to get the message that Trials Fusion isn't taking itself too seriously. The music playing sounds like it was produced for Transformers: The Animated Movie then run through 2014 production techniques, while the rider you can see has Iron Man pants on his lower half. The vision of the future developer RedLynx has gone for is a mix of preposterous gleaming towers, platforms and technology with apparent slapstick carelessness on the part of the people in charge. There's some great level design on show, which city tracks that take you from twilit marinas to rooftop chases across the tops of zeppelins. The wilderness levels are still here, but now they've got retro-futurism mashed in with them as well. The core game remains basically unchanged. For the most part, you brake, accelerate and lean. As ever, getting your balance right is key to being able to guide your bike across ever-more fiendish platforming levels. Yes, 'ever-more fiendish'. Trials' serious difficulty curve is back with a vengeance, and the game remains extremely rewarding because of it. Tricks are included, with players now bringing in the right stick to pull off moves like the Superman in the occasional stage. The game is also peppered with skill games that will set you a challenge such as climbing a near-vertical track as far as you can. Trials Fusion also brings level creation back to the table. Players can build their own courses and get everything in their toolkit that the developers at RedLynx had when they were designing the game. While level building won't be everyone's cup of tea, what it will mean for everyone is a steady stream of weird and wonderful new tracks getting piped to our consoles on a continuous basis. With the retail edition, players also get the Trials Season Pass, complete with access to a range of post-launch content.

Rabbids Invasion, the kids' TV show, has invited its audience to get stuck right into the action. Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show invites players to actively participate in a number of episodes from the series. Using motion controls, players can get stuck into no less than 20 Rabbids Invasion episodes as both an actor and a spectator. There are over 400 activities. Play through full motion games including the likes of Rabbids Dance. Get a bit more combative with Eggs battle, or even toss the rabbids through the air if you like. Just Dance is back, packing new features and a massive track list. If you're new to the whole dance genre, it's pretty straightforward. Simply use your motion control console of choice to dance in time to the on screen choreography and you're off! One of the biggest events of the last console generation is finally striding onto more powerful formats! GTA V finally makes its next-gen debut. With GTA IV having taken place in a decidedly east coast sort of setting in Liberty City, this game takes things over to the west coast. The action takes place in Los Santos and the surrounding countryside of San Andreas. Los Santos has seen better days. A sprawling metropolis full of faded stars, self-help gurus and desperate celebrities, the city has declined somewhat in the face economic uncertainty and cheap reality TV. In need of a big score are Franklin, a former street-level gangster; Michael, an ex-con living the high life in witness protection and Trevor, who's a bit on the sociopathic side. These are the three characters through whose eyes you'll see Los Santos. Of course, you'll do a lot more than looking around. The game is centred around six big heists, with plenty of driving, shoot-outs and other assorted missions to get stuck into in between. The open world map is huge, with hours upon hours of content on offer. If you should happen to get through it all, however, there's a whole other side to the game. GTA V also gets you access to GTA Online, a sprawling persistent world for you and up to 15 other players to play in either cooperatively or against each other in traditional competitive modes. With the next-gen version, players get the advantage of higher levels of detail than have ever been seen in GTA before, with better draw distances, finer texture detail and denser traffic to make the city seem more vibrant than ever.

Need For Speed: Rivals is a racing game set in an open world environment with similarities to the previous Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. While similar to Hot Pursuit in this environmental aspect - and in granting players the option to play as a racer or as one of the cops aiming to take them down - this new title from developers Ghost Games and Criterion Games features a new social driving system called AllDrive. This AllDrive system enables drop-in and drop-out gaming that means that a player can be involved in an offline, single-player campaign one moment and in a full-on online game the next. Players, as cops and racers alike, can transition into each other's games without the need of a lobby or loading screen. They might choose to engage in a multiplayer challenge or carry on doing their own thing. Gamers play cops or Racers as they compete for kudos across the landscape of fictional Redview County. There is a single-player campaign but the heart of the competition is in the returning AutoLog system, where times and challenges are set that pitch players' performance against that of their friends, meaning that whether you've got other players in your event or not, you're always competing. With the use of DICE's Frostbite 3 engine, which you might have seen in action in the Battlefield games, the visuals have made a real leap from Hot Pursuit. All the pulse-pounding action is rendered in a level of detail you've not seen in Need for Speed before!

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is the most ambitious LEGO game starring the Caped Crusader yet. While it does, of course, have Batman and Robin front and centre, it could almost have been called 'LEGO DC Superheroes', such is the size of the cast and the scope of the adventure. The 'Beyond Gotham' part of the title is certainly justified. This time out, the Dark Knight is out in space on a cosmic adventure. Braniac, who's more often known for bothering Superman, has been stealing entire cities, shrinking them down using the power of Lantern rings to add them to his sinister collection. So, right off the bat (pun slightly intended) you can see that the scale of the game has been expanded since previous entries to the series, drawing on the mythos of both Green Lantern and Superman. There's a cast to match this newfound scale, with more than 150 characters ranging from icons like Wonder Woman to the lesser-known (but no less important) figures like... well, Bat-cow. Expect The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Zatanna, Lex Luthor, The Joker and Swamp Thing to name just a tiny handful. Players can unlock different versions of characters, too, like the 1960s TV Batman (voiced by Adam West!) who lifts his cape to sneak past foes, or Arctic Batman, with a freeze gun. Gameplay is, as series fans will expect, along the usual LEGO lines. There's a dash of combat, a spot of platforming, a fair amount of environmental puzzle-solving and drop-in/drop-out cooperative play. As ever, it's all delivered with a light touch and a healthy dose of humour. That's not to say there's nothing new here, however. In one level, for example, our heroes encounter a battleship belonging to the Reach and the encounter plays out as a 2D shooter, much like Resogun. Let's be honest, though, most players will come for the sense of fun and the chance to play with that HUGE cast of characters.
